Justice In Action Newsletter, Volume 14, 27 November 2023
The Director-General, Advocate Doc Mashabane visited five courts in the Eastern Cape as part of his ongoing unannounced court visits. The visits took place on 14-15 November 2023.
The Mpumalanga Provincial Office organised a stakeholder engagement to brief stakeholders in the implementation of the Prevention and Combating of Trafficking in Persons. The engagement took place in Mbombela Mpumalanga on 20 November 2023.
The Department hosted the Human Resource Planning meeting at Kgoshi Mampuru on 13-14 November 2023.
The Director-General, Advocate Doc Mashabane and Gauteng Provincial Head, Mr Zephania Malema visited the Diepsloot Family Court to ensure a smooth openning to members of the public on 13 November 2023.
The Department held a second activation at Diepsloot Family Court which officially opened on 13 November 2023.

The Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Mr Ronald Lamola led the handover and reburial ceremony of the remains belonging to the last Mamelodi Ten student activists at Solomon Mahlangu Square in Mamelodi on 29 September 2023.
Deputy Minister John Jeffery attended the Chief Justice Pius Langa Essay Writing Competition Awards hosted by the South African Law Reform Commission at Southern Sun hotel in Pretoria on 29 September 2023.
Deputy Minister John Jeffery hosted his Vietnam counterpart Deputy Minister Nguyen Khanh Ngoc to strengthen legal relations between the two countries. The meeting took place in Pretoria on 19 September 2023.
Director-General Advocate Doc Mashabane met with the Department’s middle management (deputy directors and LP8 equivalent) at national office - while provinces connected virtually - on 21 September 2023.

Director-General, Advocate Doc Mashabane hosted a career day for the Department’s Law graduates at Ditsong Cultural Museum Pretoria, on 15 September 2023.
The Department officially hosted the National Wills Week at the Tshisaulu Burial Hall, Thohoyandou on 11 September 2023. Various Attorneys assisted community members to draft their Wills for free on the day.
The Department hosted the Public Service Women Management Week session for women senior managers at ANEW Hotel in Pretoria on 7 September 2023. Director-General, Advocate Doc Mashabane and Acting Public Protector, Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka formed part of the engagement.
The Employee Health and Wellness Programme (EHWP) directorate hosted a health screening for officials at Momentum building on 13-14 September 2023. Officials were tested for cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure, HIV&AIDS, Body Mass Index, eyesight and dental care; they were also treated for body massage.

The Department held a student engagement on Gender Based Violence and Fermicide at Mangosuthu Univeristy of Technology, Durban, on 23 August 2023.
The Chief Directorate: Social Justice and Participatory Democracy held an inaugural meeting of the Programme Implementation Committee (PIC) Governance Structure of National Action Plan to combat racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance (NAP) at Menlyn in Pretoria on the 16 August 2023.

Minister Ronald Lamola presided over the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) spiritual repatriation of four fallen struggle heroes who were bombed in different areas in the North West. The event took place on 28 July 2023.
Director-General Advocate Doc Mashabane addressed and updated staff on the achievement of an unqualified audit for the first time in five years. He addressed officials at the national office on 8 August 2023.
Chief Financial Officer, Ms Irene Singo, congratulated Financial Services Branch staff for successfully obtaining an unqualified audit for the 2022/23 financial year. She addressed staff at Momentum Building, Pretoria on 4 July 2023.

Departmental officials joined hands and dedicated 67 minutes painting and cleaning as part of commemorating Mandela Day at Thohoyandou Master’s Office on 18 July 2023.
Officials from the Laingsburg Magistrate’s Court landed a helping hand at a local shelter Marigold Safe House for GVB victims by cleaning the windows and cleaning their garden on 18 July 2023.
To mark Mandela Day, Verulam Magistrate’s Court officials in KwaZulu-Natal dedicated 67 minutes to the Verulam Day and Frail Care Centre, hosting high tea in honour of the 70 residents on 18 July 2023.
Over 200 young people had an opportunity to engage with the youth of 1976 in commemoration of Mandela Month at Menlyn, Tshwane on 21 July 2023.
Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court recently donated school shoes and sanitary towels to the needy learners of Getrude Shope Primary School in Gqeberha on 18 July 2023.
The Eastern Cape Provincial Office, together with Queenstown and Cofimvaba Magistrate Courts, commemorated Mandela Day at Save the Children Home Drop in Centre, at Mlungisi Township on 14 July 2023.

The Department hosted about 200 young people who were enlightened about career opportunities in Justice as well as dangers of substance abuse and crime. The event took place in Bloemspruit Township, Free State on 14 June 2023.

The Justice Soccer Team won two friendly games two weeks ago and last week respectively and it is currently on third place in the Nehawu football league.

The Department hosted the Director-General’s Special Innovation and Service Excellence Awards at Southern Sun, Ekurhuleni on 31 March 2023. The awards honoured officials who went above and beyond their call of during the COVID-19 pandemic. Minister Ronald Lamola was also in attendance to honour the recipients.
The South African Women Lawyers Association (SAWLA) celebrated 100 years of Women Legal Practitioners at Emperors Palace, Ekurhuleni on 30 March 2023. Director-General, Advocate Doc Mashabane addressed the audience of behalf of the Minister of Justice.
Gauteng Provincial Executive Committee was launched by the Director-General, Advocate Doc Mashabane on 29 March 2023. The launch was held at the National Prosecuting Authority’s Offices at Johannesburg.

Director-General, Advocate Doc Mashabane conducted unannounced visits to courts in the Free State on 22-23 February 2023. The courts visited were Kroonstad and Ventersburg Magistrate Courts as well as the Office of the Family Advocate.

Senior managers of the Department, Advocate Doc Mashabane, Ms Connie Mametja and Mr Donald Makhani alongside other managers visited the Pretoria Magistrate court to check on the current state of the court following the DG’s visit last visit last year. The follow-up meeting took place 31 January 2023.
The Department in partnership with other stakeholders hosted a Learner Dialogue on constitutional education at Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Facility on 3 February 2023. The dialogue was supported by the Deputy Director-General Legislative Development, Ms Kalayvani Pillay.
