The Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mr John Jeffery, will as part of the Nelson Mandela Month Commemorations, deliver a lecture to 160 tertiary-level students representing various higher education institutions in KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday, 21 July 2022. The national theme for this year’s celebrations is: “Do what you can, with what you have, wherever you are.”
The theme for the lecture is: “Promoting the culture of Human Rights – Nelson Mandela as the Advocate for Human Rights”. The Ministerial lecture aims to inspire young people to sustain the legacy of Nelson Mandela by respecting and promoting the culture of Human Rights and upholding the Constitution. It also seeks to encourage youth to forge resilience and pursue opportunities for a sustainable livelihood, to inspire youth to take action to help change our country for the better as well as to strengthen partnerships between government and tertiary institution. The lecture will be graced by the attendance of the revered delegates such as the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Manager of the Commission for Gender Equality, Ms Z Ncwane, KwaZulu-Natal Chairperson of the Legal Practice Council, Mr A Esa, and KwaZulu-Natal Deputy Chairperson of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities, Dr SM Pheto as well as the KwaZulu-Natal Regional Head, Ms Pat Moodley.
The participating tertiary institutions include: the University of KwaZulu Natal, University of Zululand, Mangosuthu University of Technology, Durban University of Technology, Coastal FET College, Howard FET College and Elangeni College. The celebration of Nelson Mandela Month calls on South Africans to make the country a better place by working in communities and supporting the campaign by participating in activities which may bring about sustainable interventions with lasting impact.
