CAPE TOWN October 26 1997 - SAPA

TRC TO HEAR HEIDELBERG TAVERN AMNESTY APPLICATIONS

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission will on Monday begin hearing the amnesty applications of three men convicted of killing four people and wounding at least five others at the Heidelberg Tavern in Observatory, Cape Town in 1993.

Richard Dala, 49, Zola Mabala, 28, and Humphrey Gqomfa, 30, are all serving jail sentences of between 18 and 27 years.

They claim to have represented the Pan Africanist Congress and its armed wing, the Azanian People's Liberation Army, when they burst into the tavern on December 30, 1993 and began firing indiscriminately amongst customers.

Their amnesty application, which is schduled to last five days, is being opposed by some of the families of those killed and injured.

Amongst the victims of the attack were Bernadette Langford, Lindy-Anne Fourie, Rolande Lucielle, Machado Cequiera and Nosalino Rato.

The hearings, which begin at 9.30am daily, will take place at the TRC's Adderley Street offices and are open to the public.
