Deputy Minister Nel to host the closing of National Wills Week at a Community Engagement in Khayelitsha, Cape Town

16 September 2026

The Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mr Andries Nel, in partnership with the Law Society of South Africa, and other participating stakeholders, will be hosting the closing event of National Wills Week at a community engagement in Khayelitsha on Friday, 18 September 2026.

The Closing Event will mark the culmination of the week-long National Wills Week programme, dedicated to expanding access to wills, estate planning and information on the administration of deceased estates. National Wills Week takes place annually in September and runs simultaneously across all nine provinces. It provides members of the public with information on the importance of having a valid Will and provides assistance to the public in drafting their Wills. The campaign also raises awareness of available legal services and facilitates access to support from legal practitioners.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to improve access to justice, particularly for communities that may not ordinarily be able to access private legal assistance.

It also creates awareness of the role of the Master of the High Court in the administration of deceased estates.

During National Wills Week service desks are established at Masters of the High Court offices across all provinces, with support from legal practitioners from the public and private sector. Members of the public receive free assistance to draft their Wills, helping to ensure that their estates are administered in accordance with their wishes after death.

Members of the media are invited to attend and cover the event as follows:
Date: 18 September 2026
Time: 09h00
Venue: Thusong Centre, Cnr Steve Biko and Walter Sisulu Drive, Khayelitsha, Cape Town
