As part of the Department's Youth Month activities to commemorate 30 years since the adoption of the Constitution, the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Education, will on Friday 26 June 2026 host the Gauteng School Poster Competition in Pretoria.
The School Poster Competition came following recent national statistics which revealed a significant rise in reported cases of child abuse, underscoring the urgent need for targeted interventions within schools and communities. Learners in Gauteng schools were required to create art pieces such as posters, drawings, and digital images that reflect their understanding of gender-based violence from a rights and responsibilities perspective.
By using art as an educational tool, the project has engaged learners in understanding the consequences of violence, the principles of the Service Charter for Victims of Crime (Victims' Charter), and the importance of protecting and upholding the rights of all children. Through awareness, creativity, and dialogue, the initiative aims to equip learners to become informed advocates for safety, dignity, and justice within their schools and communities.
The department will be joined by other stakeholders, learners and educators from all participating schools in Gauteng. The pilot project is used as a mechanism for raising awareness about crime and victims' rights in (20) identified schools in Gauteng. Based on a determination by the Gauteng Department of Education, these are schools that have experienced issues such as bullying and crime among learners.
