Minister Kubayi and Deputy Minister Nel to meet Magistracy Leadership on progress toward Independent Judiciary

06 November 2025

Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mmamoloko Kubayi, together with Deputy Minister Andries Nel, will tomorrow meet with the leadership of the Magistracy and the Chairperson of the Magistrates Commission to discuss progress toward establishing a Single and Independent Judiciary-led Administration.

The meeting will include representatives from the Magistrates Commission, the Regional Court Presidents’ Forum, and the Chief Magistrates’ Forum.

The Minister has previously outlined key steps being taken to advance judicial independence, including transferring the administration of the Lower Courts to the Office of the Chief Justice (OCJ), repositioning the OCJ outside the public service, and assigning the Chief Justice and Secretary-General key governance roles.

A multi-departmental Task Team is finalising proposals to support this transition, with a progress report ready for Cabinet consideration.

Members of the media are invited for a photo opportunity and opening remarks at the start of the meeting. A media statement will be issued at the conclusion of the meeting.
