Deputy Minister Nel to deliver a Keynote Adress at the 14th Annual South African National Moot Court Programme

The Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mr Andries Nel, will tomorrow, Sunday, 12 October 2025, deliver a keynote address at the grand finale of the 14th Annual South African National Schools Moot Court programme at the Constitution Hill in Johannesburg.

The moot court programme is a joint initiative by the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), Department of Basic Education and the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development. The four finalist schools participating in the programme are:

This year’s moot court focusses on the constitutionality of school language admission policies particularly those prescribing a single language of instruction. Learners will argue whether it is constitutional for schools to admit only learners who speak a particular language as their home language or who are fluent in that language.

The grand finale represents the culmination of an eight-month programme that engaged more than 500 grade 9 learners from across the country. This grand finale will be adjudicated by a distinguished panel comprising of Constitutional Court Judges, Supreme Court of Appeal Judges, High Court Judges, Magistrates and Senior Legal practitioners.
