The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development confirms that an incident involving a shooting occurred outside the Athlone Magistrates’ Court earlier today, Friday, 05 September 2025.
According to preliminary reports, the incident took place at the entrance gate of the court premises, with the individual subsequently collapsing just inside the court’s courtyard, a few metres from the main entrance.
The Department can confirm that the individual is a male accused who was scheduled to appear in court today on charges of assault.
At this stage, all available information indicates that the incident occurred outside the official court boundary, although the aftermath extended into the court precinct.
The Department’s Security and Provincial Management teams are on site and are liaising with the South African Police Service, who are leading the investigation.
Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
The Department condemns all acts of violence and continues to prioritise the safety and security of all court users and staff.
