Deputy Minister Nel to conduct Service Delivery Enhancement Visits to Courts in the Western Cape

The Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mr Andries Nel, will conduct court visits at the Mitchells Plain and Wynberg Small Claims Courts and the “Municipal Court” in Goodwood, Cape Town, as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen service delivery and enhance the efficiency of justice administration.

Small Claims Courts enhance speedy access to justice, efficiency and effectiveness in all these Courts countrywide, as anyone who has a civil claim of R20 000-00 and less, can approach the Court, without the help of an Attorney. Court proceedings are presided over by Small Claims Court Commissioners who are drawn from a pool of experienced legal practitioners who provide services free of charge.

The Deputy Minister will visit the “Municipal Court" in Goodwood due to the increasing requests from various municipalities across the country to establish such courts. The purpose of the visit is to assess how these courts function and operate, with the aim of formulating a uniform policy framework for establishing all “Municipal Courts.”

These visits will provide the Deputy Minister with critical insights into the operational performance of the courts and the challenges they encounter. The engagements will also create opportunities for direct interaction with stakeholders, court officials, and members of the public. This initiative underscores the Department’s commitment to delivering accessible, efficient, and equitable justice services.
