Justice Department condemns fatal shooting near Blue Downs Magistrates’ Court

21 May 2025

The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development strongly condemns the fatal shooting of a 25-year-old woman approximately 100 metres away from the Blue Downs Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 19 May 2025.

The Department wishes to clarify that this was not a court-related incident, and the deceased had no official business at the court on the day in question.

The incident occurred outside the court premises and beyond the designated court precinct.

The motive for the shooting remains unknown and is currently the subject of an active investigation by the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Although the incident occurred outside the jurisdiction of the court and the Department’s direct control, its proximity to a justice facility is deeply concerning.
