The Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mr John Jeffery, will on Friday, 27 October 2023, lead the handover and reburial ceremony of the exhumed remains of former PAC member, Ceylon Mabaso. The handover ceremony will be held at Naledi Community Hall in Soweto.
Mr. Ceylon Mabaso was one of the six individuals who were recruited to the PAC. They were executed on 19 November 1965 at the then Pretoria Central Prison. The remains of Mr Ceylon Mabaso have since been positively identified and have been readied for handover and reburial.
This event is part of the Gallows Exhumation Project, an initiative aimed at identifying, exhuming and facilitating the reburial of political prisoners who were hanged on the gallows by the apartheid regime and subsequently buried in unmarked graves. The prisoners were mainly members of the Pan Africanist Congress armed wing, POQO and the United Democratic Front.
