SAC-IAWJ to host its 17th Conference and Annual General Meeting in Cape Town

The South African Chapter of the International Association of Women Judges (SAC-IAWJ), in collaboration with the Department of Justice & Constitutional Development (DOJ & CD) as well as the Department of Women, Youth and People with Disabilities (DWYPD), will be hosting its 17th Conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Cape Town from 04 to 06 August 2023.

The event, which takes place during Women’s Month, will be held under the theme “Resilience and Innovation # End Gender Based Violence & Femicide”. It will be attended by key jurists and academics who will participate in the activities and pertinent discussions planned over the three-day period.

Justice Navanethem (Navi) Pillay,Former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, will deliver the keynote address during a gala dinner that will be held on Friday, 04 August 2023.  The SAC-IAWJ will during the gala dinner, confer the SAC-IAWJ Platinum Outstanding Women Pioneer in Leadership award 2023 on Deputy Chief Justice of the Republic of South Africa, Justice Mandisa M.L Maya. Justice Maya is the first woman jurist to be appointed to this position in the history of South Africa.

Also in attendance at the Conference and participating in the programme will be the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Mr Ronald Lamola, the Minister of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Dr.Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr “Blade Nzimande, Prof Dyani-Mhango from the University of Pretoria, Professor Vivienne Lawack form the University of the Western Cape and the National Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Shamila Batohi.

Day two and three of the conference (05 and 06 August 2023) will be dedicated to intensive discussions by jurists and academics in attendance on a variety of critical topics aligned to the main theme.
