The Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mr John Jeffery will, as part of the Department’s 16 Days of Activism of Non-Violence against Women and Children Campaign, be attending two events in KwaZulu-Natal on 2 and 3 December 2022.
The events include an Imbizo called “Unpacking the Criminal Justice system” in Plessislaer (Pietermaritzburg) on Friday, 2 December 2022 as well as an Anti-bullying Walk in Durban on 3 December 2022.
According to SAPS’ crime statistics released in the first quarter of 2022/2023 the Plessislaer (Pietermaritzburg) police station registered the 2nd highest number of murder cases in the country (after Umlazi). In the second quarter crime stats, the Plessislaer police station was the police station with the 5th highest number of murder cases in the country. This area also falls within the 30 identified Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) hotspots in the country.
The Imbizo therefore aims to unpack the criminal justice system, demonstrating the role of various role players in the system and to assist communities in the area to know where to get assistance when interacting with the criminal justice system. The Deputy Minister will be joined by a number of key stakeholders and interested parties.
On Saturday, 3 December 2022, the Deputy Minister will be leading an Anti-Bullying Walk in Durban. The walk is joint initiative between the DoJCD, the National Prosecuting Authority and the Department of Basic Education.
