Minister Lamola to deliver a keynote address at the National Conference to Commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Third World Conference Against Racism and Xenophobia (WCAR20)

20 May 2022

The Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Mr Ronald Lamola (MP), will on 23 May 2022, deliver the keynote address at the South African National Conference to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the third World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance (WCAR20) which was hosted by South Africa in 2001.

One of the key declarations of the WCAR20 was for nations to develop a National Action Plan against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance (NAP). This conference pulls together all sectors of society to rally behind the co-ordination and the implementation of the NAP.

As the nation commemorates Africa Month, the conference is an opportune moment to reflect on social intolerances such as the perpetual attacks on foreign nationals as well as acts of racism and the killing of people on the basis of their sexual orientation, gender and sexual characteristics among others. These social intolerances undermine our democracy, constitutional values and threaten social cohesion.

The two-day conference also forms part of the year-long programme to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa coming into effect.
