Minister Lamola addresses the 13th Annual Competition Law and Economics Policy Conference

28 August 2019

Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Ronald Lamola will deliver a keynote address during the 13th annual competition law, economics and policy conference on Thursday, 29 August in Pretoria at the 012Central.

In celebrating its 20-year anniversary the Competition Commission is engaging stakeholders and taking stock of the developments in the South African economy over the period. One of the challenges South Africa faces is the high levels of concentration, with only a few firms participating in important sectors of the economy. The current structure of the economy can be attributed to the apartheid legacy of inequality, poverty, and lack of economic participation, which continue to date. The democratic government has put in place measures in the past two decades to address this, of which competition law and policy is one.

The conference got underway on Tuesday and a variety of topics are under discussion including: Digital economics and competition policy, Challenges to competition policy enforcement in digital markets, Strategic alliances and competition policy and Competition Policy and procurement.

The theme for the conference is:  Celebrating 20 Years of regulating inclusive growth.”

The dialogue will discuss measures on how competition policy and regulation can be used to promote entry and transformation in the South African economy in order to unlock the country’s potential and promote a greater spread of ownership, provide consumers with competitive prices, promote employment and advance the social and economic welfare of South Africans.
