The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has declared 28 September as the International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI). As part of commemorating this day, the Information Regulator and the South African Human Rights Commission will co-host an event under the theme: “PAIA Almost Two Decades on, Reflections and Opportunities”. Guest speakers included on the programme are the Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mr John Jeffrey and Mr Mathatha Tsedu.
The day will be dedicated to raising awareness of the Promotion of Access to Information Act 2 of 2000 (PAIA) and to reflect on the successes and challenges in its implementation over the past 18 years. It will further reflect on the opportunities provided by the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA) to enhance the enforcement of the right of access to information.
