Liberty Holdings LTD data breach

The Information Regulator (Regulator) met with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Liberty Holdings, Mr David Munro and his Executive Team on 22 June 2018. The Regulator was represented by the Chairperson Adv Pansy Tlakula, Members and Senior Managers. The Regulator is satisfied with the manner in which Liberty Holdings has dealt with the data breach which was the result of cyber-criminal activity.

The Regulator will continuously engage with Liberty Holdings to monitor compliance with the provisions of the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA).

The recent incidents of data breaches in South Africa highlight the importance of understanding cyber-criminal activities and how they relate to the protection of personal information.

The Regulator encourages all companies to be vigilant of cyber-crime and to put in place adequate and appropriate cyber security measures.
