Minister Lamola calls on South Africans to safeguard the rights of Vulnerable Persons during the festive break, 13 December 2023

As the holiday season approaches and people embark on journeys to various destinations, let us prioritize road safety. Obey all rules of the road, take breaks when needed, and refrain from drinking and driving to ensure that you and your loved ones arrive alive. Always wear your seatbelt, ensure your vehicle is in good condition, and maintain a safe distance from other cars. Let us work together to ensure everyone reaches their destinations unharmed by prioritizing our safety and that of others on the road. Safe travels and happy holidays!

Let us place particular emphasis on caring for our children and elderly members. Their happiness and safety should be at the forefront of our celebrations. Take time to engage with them, share the season's joy, and create lasting memories that reflect the spirit of unity.

Every person must remain vigilant against gender-based violence. I strongly urge you to take note that South Africa now has new laws in place which legally obligates all citizens to report any knowledge, reasonable belief, or suspicion of a sexual offence against vulnerable individuals to the authorities. Failure to do so will not be tolerated.

You should not hesitate to report any suspicion of abuse against vulnerable persons.

It is our collective responsibility to foster an environment where women, children, older people, and persons living with disability in our country feel safe and respected. Let us all play our part by standing united against gender-based violence and promoting the equality and dignity of all people in our country during this festive season and beyond.

I also urge you to observe and uphold all the laws of our country. The rule of law is fundamental to maintaining order and ensuring a harmonious society. Let us celebrate responsibly, protect the vulnerable, and uphold the values that make our nation strong.

I want to convey a special message of gratitude to all the staff members in the entities under the Justice and Correctional Services portfolio. Your unwavering commitment and support in delivering on the various critical initiatives we embarked on during 2023 is deeply appreciated.

I want to express my gratitude to all the stakeholders who have contributed their time, energy, and expertise to help us achieve our objectives. Your unwavering commitment to building a more just and equitable society is genuinely inspiring, and we value your collaboration, passion, and dedication more than words can express. Your collective efforts have made a real difference, and I am deeply thankful for your support.

I extend my heartfelt wishes to each of you. May this festive season be filled with joy, laughter and precious moments for you and your loved ones. This season isn't only about celebrations and finding time to rest and rejuvenate. We should take the opportunity to recharge our spirits, gather strength and return in 2024 with a fresh perspective and renewed energy.

Thank you.
