GERMAN AWARD FOR TUTU

The Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Rebublic of Germany will be awarded to South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission chairman Desmond Tutu on November 6, the German Embassy announced in Cape Town on Thursday.

The Embassy said German president Prof Roman Herzog has made the award in recognising Tutu's distinct achievements in fostering political, economic, social and spiritual change towards a democratic society.

The award will be handed over in Cape Town on November 6 by the German ambassador to South Africa Dr Uwe Kaestner.
