The Brigitte Mabandla Justice College (BMJC), established in 1957, and renamed in 2024, has for nearly seven decades played a pivotal role in strengthening the administration of justice in South Africa. Our primary mandate is to enhance institutional capacity and performance within the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DOJ&CD), its entities, and the broader public sector. In doing so, we contribute directly to a justice system that is professional, ethical, efficient and responsive to the values and obligations of our constitutional order.
As we mark 30 years of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, the BMJC stands at an important moment of reflection and renewal. The Constitution remains the supreme framework guiding the work of every justice official. It demands accountability, access to justice, equality before the law, and the protection of fundamental rights. The evolution of the BMJC is therefore not incidental: it is a deliberate response to the constitutional imperative to build a capable and ethical state.
Historically recognised as a school for legal and quasi-legal training, the BMJC is repositioning itself as a comprehensive public justice learning institution. While we continue to deliver specialised legal and court-based programmes, we now address broader institutional capability gaps, including leadership and executive management development, governance, business applications, digital transformation, and cybercrime-related learning interventions. We are also establishing a Research and Knowledge Centre to embed evidence-based learning, promote thought leadership, and support continuous improvement across the justice sector.
As a learning college born within Africa, we are committed not only to strengthening the DOJ&CD, but also to contributing to institutional capacity across the continent through strategic partnerships and knowledge exchange.
As Head of the BMJC, I am confident in our vision: to expand specialised, accredited learning nationally and internationally; to professionalise the justice workforce; and to ensure that every learning intervention translates into measurable improvements in service delivery. Through innovation, sound governance and unwavering commitment to constitutional values, the Brigitte Mabandla Justice College will continue to advance a capable and future-ready justice system.
