JOHANNESBURG Sept 26 - SAPA

CONFUSION OVER WINNIE'S AGE

Controversial politician Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was the subject of further argument when she appeared before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Johannesburg on her birthday on Friday - this time the debate revolved around her true age.

According to various references, including Shelagh Gastrow's "Who's Who in South African Politics" and the Mail and Guardian's "A-Z of South African Politics", Madikezela-Mandela's September 26 birth date occurred in 1934 or 1936.

This would make Friday either her 63rd or 61st birthday. Other sources insisted at the Truth Commission hearing on Friday that she had turned 64.

A journalist wished her well on her birthday, receiving a smile and a thank-you in response, but failed to follow up with an inquiry as to her age.
