The Commission has approved the publication of an Issue Paper on electronic evidence for public comment. The Issue Paper has attempted to draw attention to issues for law reform with regard to matters relating to admissibility of electronic evidence in criminal and civil proceedings. INVITATION TO ENTER THE 2009 ISMAIL MAHOMED LAW REFORM ESSAY COMPETITION
The South African Law Reform Commission, in partnership with Juta, once again invites law faculties and all LLB and LLM students to participate in the Ismail Mahomed Law Reform Essay Competition for 2009. The purpose of the Competition, named in honour of the late Chief Justice and former Chairperson of the South African Law Reform Commission, is to encourage critical legal writing by students while generating ideas for law reform which are aligned to South Africa’s priorities as a developmental state.

MEDIA STATEMENT BY THE SOUTH AFRICAN LAW REFORM COMMISSION (SALRC) ON ITS INVESTIGATION INTO PRIVACY AND DATA PROTECTION (PROJECT 124)
It contains the Commission’s final recommendations for the protection of personal information and a draft proposed Bill, the Protection of Personal Information Bill, which embodies proposals giving effect to these recommendations.

The South African Law Reform Commission, in partnership with Juta & Co, has awarded the prestigious 2008 Ismail Mahomed Prize for Law Reform to two law students at a ceremony held at the Constitutional Court on 3 July 2009. Among the dignitaries present at the ceremony were Madame Justice Yvonne Mokgoro, a judge of the Constitutional Court and Chairperson of the SALRC; Justice Willie Seriti, the Vice-Chairperson of the SALRC; Prof Thandabantu Nhlapo (Deputy Vice-Chancellor at UCT); Advocate Bonisiwe Makhene, Legal Adviser to the President; Mrs Mahomed, the wife of the late Chief Justice; and Mr Enver Mahomed, the brother of the late Chief Justice with his family.
