The South African Law Reform Commission, in partnership with Juta & Co, has awarded the prestigious Ismail Mahomed Prize for Law Reform for 2009 to two law students at a ceremony held at the Constitutional Court on 16 April 2010. Among the dignitaries present at the ceremony were the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mr Jeff Radebe, Madame Justice Yvonne Mokgoro, former judge of the Constitutional Court and Chairperson of the SALRC; Mrs Mahomed, the wife of the late Chief Justice; and Mr Enver Mahomed, the brother of the late Chief Justice with his family.

The Commission has approved the publication of an Issue Paper on electronic evidence for public comment. The Issue Paper has attempted to draw attention to issues for law reform with regard to matters relating to admissibility of electronic evidence in criminal and civil proceedings. In relation to the longer term objectives of the project, this preliminary research paper has set out to identify shortcomings in the evidential provisions of the Electronic Communications and Transactions (ECT) Act 25 of 2002 and to define a possible scope for further investigation...

INVITATION TO ENTER THE 2009 ISMAIL MAHOMED LAW REFORM ESSAY COMPETITION
The South African Law Reform Commission, in partnership with Juta, once again invites law faculties and all LLB and LLM students to participate in the Ismail Mahomed Law Reform Essay Competition for 2009. The purpose of the Competition, named in honour of the late Chief Justice and former Chairperson of the South African Law Reform Commission, is to encourage critical legal writing by students while generating ideas for law reform which are aligned to South Africa’s priorities as a developmental state.

MEDIA STATEMENT BY THE SOUTH AFRICAN LAW REFORM COMMISSION (SALRC) ON ITS INVESTIGATION INTO PRIVACY AND DATA PROTECTION (PROJECT 124)
