Information Regulator to promote access, protection of personal info
Newly-appointed members of the Information Regulator (South Africa) were introduced for the first time by the Justice and Constitutional Development Deputy Minister, Mr John Jeffery during a media briefing in Cape Town recently.

The Information Regulator, which was announced 20 February 2017, is empowered to monitor and enforce compliance by public and private bodies in line with the provisions of the Promotion of Access to Information Act, 2000 (PAIA) and the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA).

Government notes judgement on withdrawal from the ICC
Government has noted the judgment delivered by the North Gauteng High Court today on the notice to withdraw from the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The Court declared the decision by government to withdraw from the ICC as unconstitutional and invalid, and revoked the notice of withdrawal that was submitted to the ICC.

Justice Department welcomes strong action against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation
The Department of and Constitutional Development welcomes the suspension of a teacher and lecturer accused of discriminating against a learner and student at Ndala High School and eThekwini Coastal College in KwaZulu-Natal respectively, on the basis of their sexual orientation. The Department condemns in strongest terms the alleged behaviour of these individuals. It further calls on the relevant authorities to speed up the investigations into these two incidents and to act decisively to root out the scourge of discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Criminal Procedure Amendment Bill, Feb 2017 [B 2—2017]
To amend the Criminal Procedure Act, 1977, so as to provide the courts with a wider range of options in respect of orders to be issued in cases of findings that accused persons are not capable of understanding criminal proceedings so as to make a proper defence; or that accused persons are by reason of mental illness or mental defect or for any other reason not criminally responsible for the offences they are charged with; to clarify the composition of the panels provided for in section 79 to conduct enquiries into the mental condition of accused persons; and to provide for matters connected therewith.
